TUDI Mechanical Wins Contracting Business.com Design/Build Award
TUDI Mechanical has been awarded a Design/Build Award from the editors of Contracting Business.com magazine, for excellence in commercial HVAC installation.
The award-winning HVAC work was performed at the new corporate offices of Sota Construction Services in Avalon Borough. The building is a state-of-the-art "green" accomplishment, as envisioned by Sota Construction Services owner, Ernie Sota. As part of Sota's integrated design approach, TUDI Mechanical Systems collaborated with engineering firm ARUP, and John Staube, PH.D.; a leading international building scientist, Gerard Damiani of Studio d'ARC; and project architect Jonathan Iams, a project engineer with Iams Consulting.
The building design features advanced technology building components, including an ultra-high efficient thermal envelope, natural building materials with thermal mass and hygric features, biophillic space, air-to-air recovery, radiant slab cooling and heating, and a closed loop geothermal system with a "free energy" economizer cycle. The design and installation of the Sota offices required careful coordination due to the specialized technologies at work. HVAC, geothermal well drilling, plumbing, electrical, site work, and structural and construction activities were combined in a "total quality" process, as envisioned by Sota Construction Services.
Notable challenges included coordination of radiant tubing with the masonry floor and unique wall systems. Training and installation mock-ups helped to minimize interferences and maximize optimal tubing layout. The system was inspected, tested, and commissioned into operation upon completion. TUDI Mechanical Systems worked with a third-party commissioning agent to verify proper component performances and ensure functionality and control interoperability.
George M. Gittinger, CEM LEED AP, TUDI Mechanical's Design/Build Department Manager, served in a design assistance capacity. Bob Cmar was a project manager.
"The Contracting Business.com Design/Build Awards were established in 1991, as our way of recognizing Design/Build excellence in commercial HVAC contracting," said Terry McIver, executive editor, Contracting Business.com. "We and a large segment of the HVAC industry believes the Design/build process offers a better opportunity for HVAC contractors, facility managers, commercial building owners, and Design/Build teams to work together to create living and working environments that offer the premium in comfort, class, and efficiency, than do other project approaches. The work performed by TUDI Mechanical, in cooperation with other contributors, is a shining example of quality Design/Building in action," McIver said.
About TUDI Mechanical
Bob Tudi founded TUDI Mechanical in 1987 with $4,000 and a pickup truck. From the beginning, Bob leaned on technology, employee perks and management incentives to grow sales, as well as employee and customer satisfaction. His contractors use the latest hand-held devices to submit paperwork immediately from the field and GPS-enabled trucks that let dispatchers better coordinate assignments and increase speed response times. Starting with modest means and fueled by some big dreams, Bob has grown TUDI Mechanical Systems into a premier HVAC and plumbing contractor in the Pittsburgh area. The company also operates an office in Tampa, FL.
