Pittsburgh Post Gazette Highlights Heat for the Needy
The 14th annual Heat for the Needy program is underway. This year, we are looking to install a record number of free furnaces, to those in need, in the Pittsburgh area. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette highlighted the program, in the below article. Pittsburgh Post Gazette McKees Rocks firm leads effort to provide furnaces to the needy November 8, 2012 By Lawrence Walsh / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette It's been 25 years since Bob Tudi of South Oakland started his own business with a pickup truck and $4,000 -- just about today's cost of installing a new furnace and related equipment and hauling away the old one. And it's been 14 years since the founder of TUDI Mechanical Systems, a green energy company in McKees Rocks, began the annual Heat for the Needy program in conjunction with Standard Air & Lite of Crafton. The program, described as a "One Day Miracle" charity event, combines the time and talents of employees and their families as they deliver and install free furnaces in the homes of needy families in the Pittsburgh area. Each year, Mr. Tudi asks the public to nominate individuals or families who need a new heating system but cannot afford it. In response, he has selected from eight to 12 nominees a year to receive new furnaces. The deadline for nominations this year is Nov. 30. Last January, the companies installed 12 new furnaces and repaired four others. They also did a free rewiring job for a homeowner and updated heating equipment for two religious facilities. More than 125 employees participated in the effort. Stacy Zatek, TUDI's marking coordinator, said Standard Air provides furnaces and money to buy components for the installations. It also delivers furnaces to TUDI, where they are placed on the trucks of service technicians to be delivered on installation day. She said some Standard Air employees also help with the installations. "This year we would like to install 15 furnaces and make about five repairs," Ms. Zatek said. The companies have installed 123 new furnaces, each with a value of $3,000, for a total of $369,000. If you'd like to nominate someone for a new furnace, send a letter that includes background information on an individual or family's circumstances, current form of heat, address and phone number. Recipients must reside within TUDI's residential service area. Go to www.tudi.com to check. Ms. Zatek said nominations typically come from family members, friends, neighbors "and even strangers who wish to touch someone's heart during the holiday season." It also asks nominators to provide their names and phone numbers. Nominations can be emailed to heatfortheneedy@tudi.com or mailed to Heat for the Needy, c/o TUDI Mechanical Systems, 343 Munson Ave., McKees Rocks, PA 15136. The company evaluates and validates each nomination. After an initial selection of potential recipients, Ms. Zatek said personal visits are made to their homes to further qualify their level of need. It then makes the final selection of recipients. The new furnaces and related equipment will be installed Jan. 26. That day will begin with a buffet breakfast at company headquarters for employees and volunteers, continue with the installation of the new furnaces and removal of the old ones and end with a buffet dinner at headquarters. It's celebrated by all as a great way to start the new year. Because fall and winter are the busiest times of the year for TUDI and Standard Air, they haven't been able to move up the dates for the close of nominations, vetting the nominees and installation of the new furnaces. But you can give them a head start -- and participate in -- the "One Day Miracle" by nominating a deserving individual or family for a new furnace. By the way, for the second year in a row, TUDI was named one of the best places to work in the Post-Gazette's second annual Top Work Places in Western Pennsylvania. TUDI was also the recipient of the American Business Ethics Award sponsored by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh.

13th Annual Heat for the Needy Program a Complete Success!

On January 28th, TUDI Mechanical and Standard Air & Lite, along with other vendors donated their time and materials for the 13th annual Heat for the Needy program.  This year, 11 free furnaces/boilers were installed in homes around the Pittsburgh area, that could not afford to purchase new heating systems. For the first time, an electrical project was added to the program.  Wiring and fixtures were replaced, bringing the home up to code, making it safe.  Volunteers arrived at the TUDI office at 6:30am for breakfast, followed by an inspirational speech by WTAE news anchor, Mike Clark.  All volunteers were on the road to their installation by 8:30am.  Heat for the Needy replaced heating systems for homes in Lawrenceville, Hazelwood, Brighton Heights, Morningside, Penn Hills, Verona and Wilkinsburg, just to name a few.

Both WTAE and KDKA evening news covered the story.  Click on the link below to view the WTAE footage:

TUDI Mechanical Wins Contracting Business.com Design/Build Award

TUDI Mechanical has been awarded a Design/Build Award from the editors of Contracting Business.com magazine, for excellence in commercial HVAC installation.

The award-winning HVAC work was performed at the new corporate offices of Sota Construction Services in Avalon Borough.  The building is a state-of-the-art "green" accomplishment, as envisioned by Sota Construction Services owner, Ernie Sota.  As part of Sota's integrated design approach, TUDI Mechanical Systems collaborated with engineering firm ARUP, and John Staube, PH.D.; a leading international building scientist, Gerard Damiani of Studio d'ARC; and project architect Jonathan Iams, a project engineer with Iams Consulting.

The building design features advanced technology building components, including an ultra-high efficient thermal envelope, natural building materials with thermal mass and hygric features, biophillic space, air-to-air recovery, radiant slab cooling and heating, and a closed loop geothermal system with a "free energy" economizer cycle.  The design and installation of the Sota offices required careful coordination due to the specialized technologies at work.  HVAC, geothermal well drilling, plumbing, electrical, site work, and structural and construction activities were combined in a "total quality" process, as envisioned by Sota Construction Services.

Notable challenges included coordination of radiant tubing with the masonry floor and unique wall systems.  Training and installation mock-ups helped to minimize interferences and maximize optimal tubing layout.  The system was inspected, tested, and commissioned into operation upon completion.  TUDI Mechanical Systems worked with a third-party commissioning agent to verify proper component performances and ensure functionality and control interoperability.

George M. Gittinger, CEM LEED AP, TUDI Mechanical's Design/Build Department Manager, served in a design assistance capacity.  Bob Cmar was a project manager.

"The Contracting Business.com Design/Build Awards were established in 1991, as our way of recognizing Design/Build excellence in commercial HVAC contracting," said Terry McIver, executive editor, Contracting Business.com.  "We and a large segment of the HVAC industry believes the Design/build process offers a better opportunity for HVAC contractors, facility managers, commercial building owners, and Design/Build teams to work together to create living and working environments that offer the premium in comfort, class, and efficiency, than do other project approaches.  The work performed by TUDI Mechanical, in cooperation with other contributors, is a shining example of quality Design/Building in action," McIver said.

About TUDI Mechanical

Bob Tudi founded TUDI Mechanical in 1987 with $4,000 and a pickup truck.  From the beginning, Bob leaned on technology, employee perks and management incentives to grow sales, as well as employee and customer satisfaction.  His contractors use the latest hand-held devices to submit paperwork immediately from the field and GPS-enabled trucks that let dispatchers better coordinate assignments and increase speed response times.  Starting with modest means and fueled by some big dreams, Bob has grown TUDI Mechanical Systems into a premier HVAC and plumbing contractor in the Pittsburgh area.  The company also operates an office in Tampa, FL.

Tudi Honored with First place Awards by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Octover 5, 2011

On October 5th, TUDI Mechanical Systems was presented with two first place awards by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
TUDI was voted #1 workplace for employees who think that their employer operates by strong values and ethics and #1 Workplace - Small Business, 50-149 Employees.  "This is a great honor, not only to be named the top workplace in Pittsburgh, but especially being named the  #1 workplace for operating by strong values and ethics", said Bob Tudi, CEO of TUDI Mechanical Systems.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette Top Workplaces of 2011 process began in June, when a company resume was submitted, highlighting what sets TUDI apart from other companies in the Pittsburgh area.  Heat for the Needy, our annual philanthropy, providing free furnaces to needy families in the area was one key point noted in the resume.  Also stated was 100% health care coverage, fitness programs, fitness center in the basement of the building, weekly trainings and numerous team building events.  "It has to be stated that the golf outings, holiday parties, fishing trips and charitable events bring the TUDI employees closer together, making it feel more like a family not work atmosphere" explained Jim Duch, Vice President of Sales.

The Top Workplaces process concluded with every employee completing a comprehensive survey covering compensation, ethics, and leadership, just to name a few.  Every employee completed the survey completely and honestly, giving TUDI one of the highest percentage rates of employee survey participation.  The information tallied from the surveys inevitably led to the #1 ranking for strong values and ethics and best workplace.

Pittsburgh Business Times Highlights TUDI Gym Facility

TUDI's on-site gym helps deal with stress, promotes healthy living

Premium content from Pittsburgh Business Times - by Lou Corsaro
Friday, May 20, 2011

It all started about 12 years ago, when employees asked Bob Tudi about the possibility of having a gym on site.  "I said, go ahead and do it," said Tudi, the owner of Tudi Mechanical Systems, Inc., and HVAC and plumbing business in McKees Rocks, with a second location in Tampa, Fla.

Over time, more was added to the gym, which is now 1,500 square feet - locker rooms, a sauna, a pool area.  There's even a tanning bed. "That's for the self-esteem side," Tudi joked.

He estimates about one-third of his 100 McKees Rocks employees make use of the gym, and has found more benefits beyond physical well-being.

"What we are finding out now is, the guys will go down there at lunch, or go there on their break, and relieve stress," Tudi said.  "I think there's a big benefit to the stress relief."  That's particularly true for the type of business Tudi runs.  "The long and short of it is, we're in the heating and air conditioning business, so a lot of what we do is physical," he said.  It also can mean many hours on the road. "If you're driving a car for five hours and your hands are tense on the wheel, if you take a 20-minute walk, your hands are less tense on that wheel," Tudi said.

But Tudi also noted that people who work behind the desks at the office also will go down to the gym to relieve stress and com back with a different mindset.

One person who's used the gym to his advantage is TUDI's COO, Kevin Bright.  Although he started with the company before the gym was even put in, his use of it is a recent development.  "I was a very infrequent user of it in the past," he said.  "I didn't really understand the benefits of it.  Now, I've refocused."

That process began about 11 months ago and Bright has since lost 76 pounds.

"I dramatically improved my overall sense of well-being, my ability to manage and control stress, and my ability to manage and lead people," he said.

He starts his day in the gym four days a week, and has been able to stay on a set schedule.  Now, aside from the lost weight, he says he lowered his blood pressure, cut down use of over-the-counter medication and became more clear of mind.

"It allows better flexibility in handling the demands of the day, and the demands of the business itself," said Bright, who often travels between the McKees Rocks and Tampa offices.

In the end, Bright is a shining example of the benefits Tudi sees in having the gym, and why he is willing to add things as the employees request them.

"Your employee is the No. 1 most-expensive piece we have, and if you can increase that (productivity) by 4 percent or 5 percent, the return on capital is enormous," he said.

TUDI Mechanical wins "ABC HVAC Subcontractor of the Year" award

Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. named their Merit Award winners on Saturday, April, 30th, 2011.  TUDI Mechanical recieved the HVAC Subcontractor of the year award for their work at the Sota Construction new office building.  TUDI installed geothermal in-floor radiant heat/cool flooring.

The Sota Construction Services new state of the art green corporate office is a registered USGBC, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, New Construction Project (LEED NC). TUDI Mechanical Systems, Inc. has enjoyed the privilege of partnering with Sota Construction Services on many new construction, renovation and energy projects.  It has been through the integrated design process that our company has been able to collaborate with many of their green projects, thus incorporating many renewable technologies such as solar, geothermal, micro-turbines and net-zero energy.

Due to the critical dew point control required for radiant cooling, much related attention was focused accordingly.  A complex tubing spacing design, temperature zoning, ventilation, humidity control and the use of natural building materials all created exciting challenges to completing the project.

Another key challenge was the application and programing of DDC automatic control system.  Key features included slab temperature monitoring, dew point control sensors, free cooling geothermal economizer control, air to air energy recovery ventilation control and the "red light-green light" natural ventilation monitoring system.

As with the unique and specialized technologies, the design and installation processes of this project afforded careful detailed and specialized coordination.  The building energy systems have proven extremely efficient.  It is estimated that along with the other high performance building systems, this building will only require 20% of the energy normally required of similar office facilities.

TUDI Mechanical Systems, Inc. is proud to have been part of this most prestigious and environmentally responsible project.  From inception, to design and construction, this extreme example of green construction, typifies all of the attributes of sustainable development and integrated processes.

TUDI MECHANICAL SYSTEMS, TAMPA SET FOR EXPANSION

October 1, 2010 -- TUDI Mechanical Systems, Tampa will upgrade to a larger facility, on the east side of Tampa, in October. Enhancements have been made to the space, showcasing some of TUDI’s advanced energy solutions initiatives.

The expansion includes the relocation to 5615 East Adamo Drive, Tampa, to better serve Commercial and Industrial customers.    The new locale provides easy access to Interstate 4, Interstate 75, U.S. Highway 41, State Road 60 and the Selmon Crosstown Expressway.

TUDI has installed an energy efficient HVAC System with demand control ventilation (DCV), which senses CO2 levels to determine the occupancy of the space.  The system adjusts the amount of ventilation required, thereby decreasing energy consumption.

The brain of the system is an Energy Management System (EMS), which manages the occupancy schedules based on a 365-day calendar year, further decreasing energy consumption and increasing savings.  The EMS can remotely control the HVAC, lighting and security system with any web-based device.

In-house Training Facility:  The new location will provide a larger training facility, allowing field technicians, vendors and customers to build stronger partnerships.  “Our new state of the art training center will allow us to educate our customers on all of the new green energy efficiency technologies available, as well as provide continued education in an ever changing market” said Jon Dela Cruz, Vice President of Sales.

About TUDI Mechanical Systems

TUDI Mechanical Systems specializes in energy management solutions and HVAC services in the Commercial and Industrial markets.

Founded in 1987, TUDI has been named ABC Specialty Contractor, Subcontractor of the Year and the Excellence in Construction Award for multiple years and received the American Business Ethics Award.  The company is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a branch location in Tampa, Florida.  For additional information on energy savings solutions, call 813-343-0011.

TUDI Mechanical Receives Award of Merit and Construction Industry Award

Pittsburgh, PA - Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Western Pennsylvania Saturday, April 17, 2010, announced the 2009 Excellence in Construction Award winners at the association's 37th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards Banquet.  The annual banquet honors the ABC members who have provided notable services to the association and those companies which deserve recognition for their dedication and hard work within the construction industry in western Pennsylvania.  More than 180 ABC members and their guests attended the banquet.

ABC contractor members submit their outstanding projects in the Excellence in Construction competition.  Categories include General Contractor (commercial, institutional, historical, renovation, etc.), Electrical Contractors (commercial, institutional, and industrial), Mechanical Contractors (commercial, institutional, and industrial) and Specialty Contractors (interior, exterior, sitework, highway, etc.).  A panel of architects then judge each project based on the following:  project scope, narrative, safety, merit shop opportunities, references, entry appearance, photography, etc.

Up to two construction projects in each subcategory are eligible for Awards of Merit, with the contractor, architect, and owner of each Award of Merit-winning project receiving an engraved pinnacle acrylic.  One Award of Merit winner in each category may be eligible for the Award of Excellence (otherwise known as the Eagle Awards) to signify ABC of Western Pennsylvania's highest construction honor and free enterprise.  The judges for this year's program were Matthew Franz of HHSDR Architects & Engineers, Max Mavrovic Architects, and Paul Zippel of Studio Z Architects.

TUDI Mechanical Systems, Inc., an ABC member for more than ten years from McKees Rocks, won the Award of Merit for their American Bridge Corporate Headquarters Expansion project.  The architect on this project was L.F. Gilberti Architect, and the owner was American Bridge.  The judges selected this project for the Award of Merit because TUDI Mechanical performed both the plumbing and HVAC work, installed a web-based temperature control system, and maintained their schedule despite the occupation of the adjacent building.

Also presented at this year's award banquet were the Construction Industry Awards, which are awarded after the winning companies are nominated and then voted on by their fellow ABC members in their respective categories.  Nominations and votes are based on active ABC promotion, workmanship, respect, and safety.

TUDI Mechanical Systems, Inc., of McKees Rocks, won the 2009 Construction Industry Award for Subcontractor of the year in the $1-$3 million category.

ABC of Western PA Chairman Robert A. Glancy, president of R.A. Glancy & Sons, Inc., last year's Frank Irey, Jr., Member of the Year Award winner, presented this year's honor to the association's immediate past chairman Keith A. Impink, president of Westmoreland Electric, Inc., in acknowledgment of his outstanding service and commitment to ABC.

Stergios Kalorgeris, from JKECO Electric, Inc., was this year's inductee to the Safety, Education & Training Hall of Fame for his outstanding commitment and service to the safety and education programs offered by ABC of Western PA.  Director of Education, Elizabeth Yorio made the presentation.

Also presented were the Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) Awards.  The STEP Program, established in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Heath & Safety Committee, serves as a valuable tool for ABC members to consistently build upon their safety training programs and gain recognition for their outstanding efforts.

Announcing the TUDI Home Comfort Plan

TUDI is proud to announce the redevelopment of our energy saving Home Comfort Plan.  Formally called the TUDI Service Plan, this new product provides greater discounts on repairs, plumbing services and adds a new and exciting feature called "Loyalty Credits" which rewards customers $50 in credits for each year they're a Home Comfort Plan customer.  These credits can be used toward the purchase of a new heating and cooling system.

As with the old plan, the major focus is keeping your heating and cooling systems operating at peak efficiency through bi-annual precision and safety tune-ups.  Another added feature of the plan is the ability to choose between two levels of service designed to meet the needs of your current system and budget.

Changes in the plan were developed over the course of one year, and were greatly influenced by the needs and requests of TUDI customers.  Click here to learn more about the new Home Comfort Plan.
